Day 15 - Lake Louise to Banff (20.07.2015) 65 km (1207km), 311 elev. (11996m)

Lake Louise is a small tidy town with some beautiful resorts and a small shopping mall with exquisite gift shops and, of course a hostal: It was a claustrophobic experience to sleep in an upper bunk bed  in a room with three other travellers, among them a very friendly Japanese man of 65, who travels all over the world one month per year.

On the road I met Felix Schleuniger from Oberäggeri, Schweiz - what a coincidence! He was on his way back from Lake Louise where he finished the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and was now returning to Calgary for his flight home. I really admired his kit: a mountainbike with a light trailer. I later found out that Felix is cycling for a cause: The "Niemann-Pick disease, type C". I  fully admire this dedication. Here is a link to the relevant article at Wikipedia:,_type_C

and an article in his National paper:  ... Facebook:

Banff is a very busy tourist town, modern. I cycled up to Campsite Village II where I got the very last site although it was only early afternoon. Banff was full of Asian tourists, just like most coaches that visited Icefields.

Shopping at Safeway's back in town after setting up camp left me with a surprise: a broken pannier holder prevented me from taking the full bag back up to the campground. Wow, was I glad this defect occurred while I was in a town! What if this had happened out in the mountains?

A friendly taxi driver drove me up at a surprisingly cheap rate (9 $), wheras everything else in Canada is fairly expensive. The taxi driver was a former professional firefighter for BC, he even went to AUS in early 90s.
